Long-Term Remote Learning
If a student or group of students is required to quarantine for 2 weeks or are otherwise absent for 2 weeks or more, the teacher will provide remote learning similar to in-person learning.
Considerations will be given if a student is experiencing illness and is unable to complete work.
Whole-class Remote Learning
If an entire class is quarantined or the school is required to shut down, the following procedures will be followed. All students are required to participate in distance learning every day.
Priorities: Religion, Literacy, Math – Instruction provided at a typical classroom pace
Secondary Considerations: Science, Social Studies – Instruction provided once per week
Google Classroom/Google Meet – Total instruction should be 8 hours per week minimum
K-2nd Approximate Time Frames – about 1.5 hours per day, minimum 8 hours per week – includes both live online learning and independent practice and tasks
3rd-6th Approximate Time Frames – about 2 hours per day, minimum 8 hours per week – includes both live online learning and independent practice and tasks
Office hours – Teachers will keep daily office hours of at least 30 minutes when they may be reached for one-on-one or small group conferencing, lessons, or support. Teachers will publish these hours in the Google Classroom and communicate them to parents via email.
Assignments – As many assignments as possible will be converted to digital delivery during remote learning. The teacher will communicate how assignments are to be turned in. In certain situations, a packet exchange program may be instituted. Since our plan is to limit days of remote learning, teachers will be relying on digital delivery only or on materials that they send home in advance of a closure.
Grading – Grading will be maintained in the same manner as if learning in person. If a closure is greater than 3 weeks, the grading procedure may be reevaluated.
Technology – All students will be issued a school device and charger. K-2nd will be assigned an iPad and 3rd-6th will be issued their Chromebook. Teachers will use Google Classroom to communicate schoolwork. Google Meet will be used for live video. The Google Meet sessions will be recorded for those who need to watch it later.
Reopening Plan 2020-2021
Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School
The board, principal, and staff of Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School are committed to providing quality education in a safe environment with Christ at the center. We intend to begin the school year on August 20 with all students on campus full time. As the health and safety of all students and staff are of utmost importance, we will at all times during the year follow the guidance provided by the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Department of Public Health, and our local Public Health officials.
This is a living document, and as such, it is subject to change as conditions change and as needs arise.
Healthy Students – The primary goal is that all students in attendance at school are well.
At School – We are considering each class to be a family group. Within the class, there will be fewer expectations. At those times when students may encounter students and adults outside their class, there will be more expectations.
