Welcome to Second Grade
Our classroom theme reminds us that we "Donut Forget: Jesus Loves Us!!" We will study Bible Stories from the Old and New Testament, including Creation, Abraham, Noah, and Jesus's miracles and ascension. In math, we will be working on learning math facts, adding, subtracting, word problems, and using manipulatives to solve. We are learning both procedural and conceptual thinking when it comes to math! We use The Next Steps to Guided Reading, Guided Writing, and VoWac for Phonics and reading. Students read and work on leveled reading skills to aid in accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, while reading fiction and non-fiction books. We use Fast Testing to help us monitor reading accuracy and fluency. We will write friendly letters, daily journals, and work on writing paragraphs. For Science, we focus on many topics: plants, animal habitats, and states of matter. We get to melt crayons, build dams and bridges, and more! In social studies, we study American history, pioneers, cowboys, and patriotic songs. We finish off our year, with a field trip in April to the Prairie Heritage Center, where we get to hike, learn more about animal habitats and pioneers, and see the buffalo! Second Grade Rocks!!
