Welcome to Second Grade
Our classroom theme is the Fruits of the Spirit! We want to show each other love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control as taught in Galations 5:22-23. We will study Bible Stories from the Old and New Testament, including Creation, Abraham, and Jesus's miracles and ascension. In math, we will be working on learning math facts, adding, subtracting, word problems, and using manipulatives to solve! We have a new math curriculum this year, so we are learning both procedural and conceptual thinking! We use The Next Steps to Guided Reading, Guided Writing, and VoWac for Phonics. Students read and work on leveled reading skills to aid in accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, while reading fiction and non-fiction books. We will write friendly letters, daily journals, and work on writing paragraphs. For Science, we focus on many topics, plants, animal habitats, light, states of matter, and dinosaurs. During our dinosaur unit, we get to enjoy resources (DVDs and books) from the Creation Museum in Kentucky! In social studies, we study American history, pioneers, cowboys, patriotic songs, and more! We finish off our year, with a field trip in April to the Prairie Heritage Center, where we get to hike, learn more about animal habitats and pioneers, and see the buffalo!
